A Leadership Paradigm Shift: From Transactional to Principled Living
As leaders in our respective spheres of influence, we've all been tempted to think that our success is directly tied to our actions.
But is this really how God operates?
The Transactional Mindset
We've been taught that if we do "A," then God will do "B." We try to "buy" God's favour by doing good deeds or giving generously, expecting a specific outcome in return. But this mindset is not only limiting but also misguided.
The Principled Life
God is not TRANSACTIONAL, He's PRINCIPLED! He doesn't work on a "give-to-get" basis, but rather on an "act on my principles, you will get results" basis. This fundamental shift in understanding can revolutionise the way we lead and live.
Timeless Principles
Our God is a God of principles, not transactions. He has established timeless principles that govern the universe, and when we align ourselves with these principles, we experience the blessings and favour that come with them.
Some of these principles include:
- The principle of honour
- The principle of generosity
- The principle of tithing
- The principle of diligence
- The principle of consistency
- The principle of investment
- The principle of savings
- The principle of watering your seed
- The principle of stewardship
- The principle of faith
- The principle of brokenness
Real-Life Examples
Let's look at two examples:
Imagine John, a successful entrepreneur who owns a chain of restaurants. John wants to expand his business and open a new location. He decides to "give to God" by donating $10,000 to his local church, expecting God to "bless" his business venture.
However, John hasn't taken the time to learn and apply the principles of God. He hasn't honed his skills as a business owner, he isn't diligent in his work, and he doesn't prioritise excellence in his restaurants.
Meanwhile, his competitor, Sarah, has taken the time to learn and apply the principles of God. She has developed a strong work ethic, prioritizes excellence in her business, and is diligent in her work. As a result, her business is thriving, and she's able to expand her operations without relying on "transactional" thinking.
Another great example is that of Chick-fil-A founder, S. Truett Cathy. Cathy built his business empire on the principles of God, prioritizing excellence, integrity, and generosity. He famously closed his restaurants on Sundays to honour the Sabbath, a decision that flew in the face of conventional business wisdom.
However, Cathy's commitment to God's principles paid off in the long run. Chick-fil-A became one of the most successful fast-food chains in the country, with a loyal customer base and a reputation for excellence.
Applying Principles in Daily Transactions
But here's the thing: these principles don't just apply to our spiritual lives or business ventures. They can also be applied to our daily transactions with people and businesses.
Think about it.
When we operate on a principled basis, we:
- Build trust with others
- Foster strong relationships
- Make wise financial decisions
- Prioritize excellence in our work
- Demonstrate integrity in our business dealings
By applying God's principles to our daily transactions, we can experience greater success, build stronger relationships, and make a lasting impact on those around us.
The Path of Life or Death
But here's the thing: these principles lead us to a critical fork in the road. When we choose to live by God's principles, we choose the path of life. When we reject these principles, we choose the path of death.
As Deuteronomy 30:19 says, "This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live."
The choice is clear. Will we choose to live by God's principles, or will we try to forge our own path? The consequences are eternal.
A Challenge
So, I want to leave you with a challenge today. Take some time to reflect on your own life and leadership. Are you operating on a transactional or principled basis? Are you trying to "buy" God's favour, or are you trusting in His principles?
Let's make a shift today. Let's choose to live by God's principles, not our own understanding. Let's trust in His goodness and His character.
